Course Overview
The rules, values, and methods of communication of a family impact the business functioning in a family business. The unique personalities and stages of growth by individual family members impact how the family works together. In order to aid the business, this course will help the advisor understand the complex landscape of the systems from the business and family perspective. The family systems perspective will be outlined to help advisors understand and work within the dynamic structures of the family and the business and the challenging areas that frequently overlap.

- Identify and anticipate sensitive areas as they work with family business clients by utilizing models from individual psychology and family systems theory.
- Define the three interacting stages of development (Business, family, and individual) and how the advisor can gain a more comprehensive understanding of unresolved issues.
- Define and share how the Genogram can be a helpful tool to provide insight into the way a family functions.
- Understand family communication patterns and how to identify barriers to effective communication.

Ted A. Paterson, Ph.D. joined ºÚÁÏÍø¹ÙÍø in 2015 and is currently an Associate Professor of Management. In 2020 he was named the director of the Center for Family Enterprise and the L. W. "Bill" Lane Professor in Family Business Management. He currently serves as Senior Editor for the Journal of Business Research. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 2014. Prior to his doctoral studies he was a financial advisor for 10 years. Dr. Paterson's research interests center on positive organizational behavior, leadership, ethics, identity, and family business. He has taught a wide variety of management courses and currently teaches MGMT 552, Organizational Behavior.
